In other words, don't be a hypocrite. The importance of this goes beyond letting the people around you down when you say one thing but don't follow up or commit to your word. At the same time, you are letting yourself down because deep inside you will realize that you said one thing but did the complete opposite. This is damaging to both self confidence and self esteem.
You word is your bond, and the things that you say have a very important impact on your friends, family, and personal mentality. I have grown to be very conscientious of the things that I say to people. In other words, will I be able to deliver on this? Will I be able to back up the things I am saying. These are important questions to ask because if you are just spewing words out of your mouth to make other people happy you are just going to disappoint them down the road, and furthermore, disappoint yourself.
It's also extremely important to tell the truth to yourself. Many people say on January 1 every year that they are going to start working out and lose weight, yet many people don't do that. Think about the consequences that has on your own mental. You told yourself one thing and failed, that makes you a failure and now you have to live with that. One of the biggest self confidence killers is lying to yourself and when you learn the problem with it, and fix it you will come to realize the different that it makes very fast. So quit lying to yourself, be reasonable, tell the truth 100% of the time and people will enjoy talking to you, and you will enjoy talking to yourself.
