Outlier: A statistical observation that is markedly different in value from the others of the sample.
Really absorb the definition of outlier here. I spent time going through my dictionary looking for it so that it can add value to your life, not so you can browse over the definition and throw it out as soon as you're done reading it.
In the year 2023 everyone is represented by a number. Your GPA, your bank account balance, your work ID, your phone number. I can go on and on, I'm sure you can too. Big ones here are GPA and bank account balance, right? Say you have a 4.0 GPA, you're an outlier! Similar to having a 0.0 GPA, that number tells you a lot about the person the number is representing. 4.0, that student must be very smart, a diligent worker, someone who I want to be on my side. 0.0, that student should stay as far from me as possible I want nothing to do with them.
Same with bank account balance, everyone wants to be a millionaire, no one wants to be friends with someone who has no money. There are a couple points I am really trying to get at here. First point, there are good outliers, ones that are clearly exceptional people, ones that attract the attention of the people below. Second, the people who are the good outliers have pretty much anything they can want or need at any given time. This is the 99% to the 1%, this is why people say the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. "Broke is a condition of the mind not the pocket" said by Luke Belmar who is inspirational in his own right, but it is exactly right.
Now I know I am using GPA, which I don't believe in anyway because of reasons I may go into down the road, and bank account balance because those are easy examples. You can be an outlier in anything, it is not necessarily a number too but it is tangible. I was a cross country runner, say the team was doing 5 miles that day. I did 7. Why? Well the coach would look at the report and say look at this kid quite literally going the extra mile. YOU STAND OUT.
